Blanketing Daisy

GUESS what my weather bug says right now for the outside temperature?!

Drumroll:
..........................................
......................................
..............................
.......................
.................
...........
......
...
..
.
11 degrees Fahrenheit. Which that temperature is of the town we are in. But we are in the mountains. So you can subtract about 3-4 degrees off that. So it's about 8 or 7 degrees.

Ew, right?

So. Remember this blanket I got Daisy on sale this last summer? I'm glad I got it on sale. Anyway, today I put it to use.

Sorry I have no picture of Daisy with it on :-( but I seem to have misplaced my camera battery charger...but I guess it was time for a new one...it's 3 or 4 years old lol. Anyway, I put it on Daisy this morning. She was scared of it. Finally I just through it on her and let her calm down. She did that strong snorting/roaring thing over and over again, but eventually she calmed down. She didn't understand why this *thing* was hanging over her entire body.

I let her off the cross ties, and she stood there like she couldn't move. I called her over, and she started walking, and then starting trotting looking scared and confused. She spooked herself! She'd look behind herself and see nothing and then she was so confuzzled because of that blanket. It was quite funny to watch her try to run away from the *scary* thing behind her that just *never* showed itself! Lol

She got used to it, though. She's had a blanket before, but that was before I owned her, so...

She's sleeping with it right now. It feels good to know she's comfy. :)

Unfortunately, because of ice, I haven't been able to ride her. :'-( She's getting very bored, and extra excited all the time...poor girl. But it looks like I will start boarding her this month already, Christmas time I think...so then we can ride.

Daisy tends to not engage her hindquarters AT ALL when we ride. Horses are supposed to drive themselves foreword with their hinds, but instead, she kind of pulls herself along. I didn't notice until the show in September, when someone pointed it out to me. And I notice it more, now that I'm riding only bareback again. When she canters, it feels like she is falling foreword, because she's not using her back legs. That could also be why her front hooves bruised so bad last summer...she uses them so much more. Anyway, I'm taking lessons this winter and hopefully we'll jump at the fair next year, once we fix her hindquarter problem ;-).

Over and up,

aww, that's good she has a blanket!! how do you fix that hindquarter problem? here tonight it's going to be like 19 degrees, and i feel so bad for all the horses at Pee Wee, especially since its really windy and they don't even have a run in or anything. =[

Silly girl! I bought Baby Doll a blanket and now I'm interested to see how she'll do with it, too.
It's been pretty warm around here, though...up into the upper 60's. I even went riding yesterday for about 4 hours. Man! I was so sore! I hadn't ridden for 2 weeks, ever since I went to the hospital. I was so out-of shape!
You never realize just how much exercise it is too ride a horse :)

Baby Doll sometimes forgets to engage her hindquarters, too. I've not yet figured out a gentle way to remind her to engage.
Maybe you'll share some of your tips soon :)

Here is how my old trainer and my friends dressage trainer said to get your horses hind quarters engaged~
first you "wiggle the bit back and forth(gently)like your hands are floating on a cloud but at the same time squeeze w/ your calf and thigh. My friend(and me)can now get our horses to collect AND do the piaffe(trot in place). But only collect the horse for short periods of time because the horse doesn't have much muscle in the hindquarters(at first)and you want to slowly build that muscle up until they have enough muscle to always be collected:D! Hope that helped!

riding up and down hills will help her gain strength in her back legs..
so will jumping.
it's nice that she has a blanket.
my dad refused to get a blanket and the other day he was freezing, so i'm borrowing a blanket from my instructor. some other boarder has a blanket that doesn't fit her new horse and she's giving it to me!!! i'm so excited!!!

Hey!

Anika: Yesss, normally it's over and out, but I say over and up to keep it interesting...

Lisa: Do you know if Baby Doll has ever had a blanket? Daisy was really spooked of it at first, but I just said "whoa" over and over and she was ok...

Southern Commander:
Thanks for the tip!!!!! I'll try it!

Michaela: I reccommend (if you want to get a different blanket or the blanket you're getting gets dirty/ripped, etc) buying a blanket during the off-season (summer)...Like I mentioned, it was SO cheap that way.

Hey Melli,

Well Baby Doll's almost 16 yrs old, so I figured she's worn a blanket before, but shd did snort quite a bit and try to avoid me putting the blanket on for about 10minutes or so.
Once I buckled it on, though, she didn't seem to care at all, and actually seemed to enjoy wearing it. lol!
