Super Sunday.... :D

I had an absolutely wonderful Sunday, pretty much, so I just had to share about it.
Daisy was trailered to board at Jean's on Thursday afternoon. I rode on Thursday and Friday, Saturday I didn't make it to the barn, and then I went today after church.

I ordered the above cooler from horseloverz.com (AWESOME site; lots and lots of sales alllll the time) for $34 about a week ago, and it finally arrived Saturday and I tried it out today...I apologize for the picture quality, I took it with my phone. :) It looks sorta silly like that, but it's contoured and I'm glad I have it, because Daisy sweats a ton in winter, and it helps to get the sweat off. They didn't have it in red, so I had to settle for blue. :)

I got to the barn, unblanketed her, tried the cooler on, and then finished grooming and got on to ride. Daisy was very agreeable during grooming already; she leaned into the brush like she was loving it and she wasn't really girth-y today during saddling, either.

I headed out to the arena and was alone for the first half hour. I got on, and warmed up slowly, first walking and having her get on the bit at the walk, then slowly the trot. With the new Kimberwicke, she's on the bit a LOT more often, but she's not necessarily stepping through, which stinks...I'm hoping to take dressage lesson soon to see what I can do about that. I got her going and some nice trots in both directions while on the bit the majority of the time, and practiced getting nice round circles. Then I got a nice trot on a small circle going left, and asked for her left lead. She got it and after a little bit actually got on the bit for one of the first times cantering; yey! It didn't last for long periods, she'd get on the bit only for a few strides at a time, but it's improvement! I had her collecting her canter, and then I changed directions and trotted, then cantered right. She's generally really speedy going right because no matter what, it's still not her favorite side. I was really happy today, though, because she collected herself at the right lead much better then usual.

After that, I kinda made up a dressage test for myself :P and ran through it, changing directions and diagonals and canter leads and circling and even tried a free walk and such...she was sooo good!

Eventually Oliver (Jean's son) and Sarah (a 4H-er) came in on their ponies, and I rode with them a bit, got off to do some groundwork, and ended up quitting that and just walking around with Daisy following me. Generally, if I walk around without holding Daisy, she doesn't follow me. Even if we've just done a join-up, she'll only follow me for a little while before stopping or heading for the gate. Today, I did NO join up and she followed me everywhere! I used a lot of body language and had her pivoting on the ground just by stepping toward her, and turned circles and walked one direction, walked another, and she always followed! At the end, I walked toward the door, but stopped in the middle of the ring, said "whoa" and she stopped, too! If I'd been her I woulda kept goin' for the door :P.

So I had a wonderful ride :)

Just wanted to ask, does anyone know of specific problems a horse could have in a leg that's NOT hoof related that could throw off their leads (like Daisy's right lead) or make them stumble a bit while turning? I just know that if I take a dressage lesson, the trainer will jam on me that Daisy's hooves are making her "off" when she makes a tight turn to the right, but that can't be possible because her hooves are wonderful right now; no bruising whatsoever. She's had that funny stumbling turn problem since last winter at least, which is why I know the trainer will bring it up. Daisy's canter to the right is also "funny"; to me it just seems speedy, but another rider told me that she looks like she's throwing her front right out really far, like it looks stiff, when she canters on it. Frankly, it ticks me off that said trainer right away assumes it's her hooves simply because she's barefoot, because it could equally be any other part of her leg/body. Can she just have some sort of leg abnormality? I have no idea what it would be...this is probably silly, but could she have a shorter right leg or something? :P Or is it beginning arthritis (She's only 11, though)? Should I try joint supplement?

------------------------------------------------------------
On another note, I dissected a horse leg at a vet clinic yesterday (Saturday)! It was quite an experience, but very very cool...sad, but cool. I learned a lot about the leg, and it was really interesting to see everything underneath the skin and hair :P. Some say that's gross; to a point, it is, but I thought it was a great learning experience that isn't offered often and I'm glad I went.

Horsefly Season

Bonjour, my blogger friends!
No, I'm not in France. I'm still in NY, in the height of the horsefly season. AKA, the WORST time of year ever. Even worse then winter.

Horseflies are JERKS. I was wondering already where they were this year, but now I realize they must just not come out until just before fall. These buggers are HUGE. And disgusting, and PAINFUL. I read up about them a bit; these flies have "scissor-like" teeth that slash open the skin of a horse/cow/person, so that the blood comes out and they can lick it off. It's very painful. Luckily, due to them being so huge, they're very easy to smack and kill. However, I must have killed at least 30 or 40 this season already, and they're still there. Of course.

Riding is kinda a pain right now; literally. I haven't been bit, but I DO NOT want to be. They fly all over and threaten biting you. Yesterday Daisy got bit by one while out grazing, and she was bleeding, so I felt SO bad. Today, I had her out to free-graze, and I listened to her outside the window running back and forth to avoid them. She went in her stall, the only place to avoid them, but came back out; poor girl just wanted grass! I had sprayed her with fly spray already, so I was trying not to watch; I knew she wanted to graze, but I hated the flies.
Then I looked out and saw this:

Daisy doesn't normally go in the garage, but apparently she was about to go in, hoping for some relief. And I found these munching happily on her:

OUCH(just so you all know, I killed all three just after the pic was taken).
SO. I stood there wishing I had a flysheet. I've never bought one, used one, never considered one...but then, like *magic*, I thought of my show sheet! And, voila:

I got it on my birthday a year ago from my cousin, Anika, and planned on using it for showing, to keep Daisy clean...I never ended up using it, though, because Daisy never rolls anyway (yey for me!).
Daisy kinda spook at it, though, as she always does when wearing a blanket for the first time in a little while. Notice how her butt is pulled in; yeah, she spooked BAD, trying to run away from herself :-P lol.

Then she was fine. Fly-free and happy, she got to keep grazing. :) yey!

I must say, I think she looks like she's grazing in a pair of pajamas :-P lol

Soo...I imagine I'm not the only one who struggles with the horseflies....what do you do to keep them away??

Until next time,

Pictures of the Gatsby

Notice how dark her coat got?! It's crazy!

Thank you, Mom! She took these pictures of Daisy with her blanket this morning...I really really like the Gatsby blanket. It's not one of the more popular brands, but it's obviously a good blanket, and it's built well...some buckles that look like this are kind of annoying because on that first buckle (not the one with the hole that the other one goes in) has a rubber thing on it so that once it's latched, it doesn't come undone easily...this is good, except that it makes the buckles a little harder to close...but I guess it's important to have them, for safety...

Anyway, those are some pictures....

Blanketing Daisy

GUESS what my weather bug says right now for the outside temperature?!

Drumroll:
..........................................
......................................
..............................
.......................
.................
...........
......
...
..
.
11 degrees Fahrenheit. Which that temperature is of the town we are in. But we are in the mountains. So you can subtract about 3-4 degrees off that. So it's about 8 or 7 degrees.

Ew, right?

So. Remember this blanket I got Daisy on sale this last summer? I'm glad I got it on sale. Anyway, today I put it to use.

Sorry I have no picture of Daisy with it on :-( but I seem to have misplaced my camera battery charger...but I guess it was time for a new one...it's 3 or 4 years old lol. Anyway, I put it on Daisy this morning. She was scared of it. Finally I just through it on her and let her calm down. She did that strong snorting/roaring thing over and over again, but eventually she calmed down. She didn't understand why this *thing* was hanging over her entire body.

I let her off the cross ties, and she stood there like she couldn't move. I called her over, and she started walking, and then starting trotting looking scared and confused. She spooked herself! She'd look behind herself and see nothing and then she was so confuzzled because of that blanket. It was quite funny to watch her try to run away from the *scary* thing behind her that just *never* showed itself! Lol

She got used to it, though. She's had a blanket before, but that was before I owned her, so...

She's sleeping with it right now. It feels good to know she's comfy. :)

Unfortunately, because of ice, I haven't been able to ride her. :'-( She's getting very bored, and extra excited all the time...poor girl. But it looks like I will start boarding her this month already, Christmas time I think...so then we can ride.

Daisy tends to not engage her hindquarters AT ALL when we ride. Horses are supposed to drive themselves foreword with their hinds, but instead, she kind of pulls herself along. I didn't notice until the show in September, when someone pointed it out to me. And I notice it more, now that I'm riding only bareback again. When she canters, it feels like she is falling foreword, because she's not using her back legs. That could also be why her front hooves bruised so bad last summer...she uses them so much more. Anyway, I'm taking lessons this winter and hopefully we'll jump at the fair next year, once we fix her hindquarter problem ;-).

Disappointment

Because I've been working for fun at our family's new restaurant, I've spent some money that I've earned. I ordered this saddle pad for my western saddle, because it is baby blue (in the picture) and baby blue is Daisy's show color.

I also ordered this blanket for winter, because it was on sale for $100 off and when I board Daisy at Jean's for a few months this winter she will need a blanket.

Unfortunately, I just opened the box and found this color pad. Green. and tan...I'm kinda disappointed--I was excited that I'd have the blue pad in for the western show I'm in this weekend (Actually, Jean is picking Daisy up in half and hour to take her to her house, where I will board Daisy for the week) and now I get this green pad...granted, I guess I should have realized when it said "assorted colors" and when I wasn't allowed to choose the color that I would get any random color, but still...I guess I will send it back. I will be doing a western pleasure type of show on Sunday and then the Saturday after that I will be doing pole bending/barrel racing/etc, so maybe if I send the saddle pad back now I can get a new one in time for the Saturday show...if not, I'm going with my ugly gray one :-/...this stinks...

Luckily I didn't care what color the blanket is. It's navy blue with green straps--it's ok. I'm not going to open it-I'm saving it for winter.

So that's all I have to say...the farrier came today...Daisy reared twice on her first front hoof, but I got mad at her and the rest of the time I said "Whoa" and "Stand" over and over and over again and she was ok...then on the last (front) hoof she reared again so we had to give her hay in a bucket....she actually hit the ceiling the last time...next time the farrier will just take her shoes off completely for winter, so I'm glad--I don't have to deal with her rearing until next spring :-P...

Ok, thanks for listening to me complain.

Birthday Today...

Well....today was my Birthday, in case you didn't see it on other blogs(Thanks you, everyone who did Birthday posts for me! That was very nice of you. ;-)) and I got some great gifts. First off, from my parents I got money towards a saddle I want. I would love to have a Wintec 500 English saddle with CAIR air panels and the adjustable gullet system in size 16.5 medium tree(I just thought I'd say all the facts about it). You can see a picture and learn more about it here, if you care....probably don't, but whatever. :-P

My cousin, Anika, also got me a very pretty stable blanket for showing...I mentioned it once through comments, but I'm planning on showing Miss Daisy-Mae next summer at our county fair, and maybe the state fair, plus other shows from a saddle club near us, in Western Pleasure, maybe English Pleasure, and Barrel Racing...that's all I'm planning on so far...maybe a halter class....but anyway, I can use this blanket on Daisy after I've given her a bath-it's light, so it's not hot, but it will keep her clean for showing in case she rolls or gets dusty.

I'm going to show Daisy in barrel racing, like I said, and I'm REALLY excited. I've only shown a miniature pony before and I loved it, but I'm not very knowledgeable about showing in Western pleasure or English pleasure...or barrel racing. I'll learn, though. Daisy did it with her old owner and was apparently really good at it, so I'm excited to see how it goes. When I ride her I can already see the potential...Man, I'm so excited. :)

The last picture is of a sign Anika made for my Birthday. I have one that says Miss Daisy and one that says Daisy...the Daisy one hangs in my locker at school, and the Miss Daisy(as you can see) is hanging above Daisy's stall door now. I really like it because the whole time I've wanted a sign for her, but I thought it'd be silly to get one because there's really no ideal place to hang it, and she's the only horse...but this one is perfect. I love it...anyway, I had a good Birthday....

Have a good rest of the week! It could be awhile until I'm posting...Maybe Thursday, or Friday.....or Saturday.....oh, whatever, bye!
:-)

Oh, btw, I just put that picture of Genevieve in because I thought it looked cute...cozy....
